Counteract feeling down

Feeling down for a short time is normal and it happens to everyone from time to time. One can get himself out from it with a little self-care. But it becomes necessary to talk to your counselor/doctor if it persists for a long period and interferes with your work or home-life. Below are a list of things you can do to shake off feeling low :

Socially Connect

If you have a friend nearby bring him for a walk outside together. If no one is available make a phone or internet call. Talking with a person you care about helps you feel supported and decreases your loneliness and stress levels. This can lift up your mood a little. Social connections are shown by research to also strengthen the immune system and decreases heart problems.

Get Some Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate contains flavanols that improves blood flow to the brain and may help you feel up. But don’t take it in excess because it also contains fat, carbs and caffeine. Aim at a square of dark chocolate containing 70% coca or more three times a week.

Play Music

Music has a calming effect on the brain. It can bring on relaxation and stimulate brain to secrete painkillers.

Listening to or playing music can boost up your mood.

Laugh

Laughing can relieve the muscle tension, and benefit heart and lungs. During laughing the brain releases substances in the blood stream that help the body fight infections and pain. So you may watch some comedian play or some funny TV show or movie clips.

Do a random kind act

When one does some good act to someone, the body secretes endorphins and other substances into the blood stream. These function as natural painkillers and are related to trust, pleasure and connection with other human fellows. Helping others is shown in research to increase happiness level and boost up general well-being.

Random kind acts be as simple as calling a relative, allowing someone to cross the road intersection before you, making coffee for you colleague, and sharing a meal with a neighbor.

Play with Your Pet

Hugging your pet can help too. Or even being around it. The body secretes oxytocin which can help lifting up the mood and bonding humans to other living beings.

Drink Plenty of Water

If the body is in need of water, dehydration ensues. One feels tired, and exhausted. Even mental clarity can be affected. Water is also available in foods like fruits, and veggies. make sure to get enough water and stay hydrated.

Go For a Walk

Don’t keep indoors, go outside in the nature. It can lift up your mood and it is healthy for your heart, blood pressure , muscle tension and your stress level. If it is possible take your dog with you and have a friend to keep you company. You may also do some workout during your stroll outside.

At your office, keep a picture of the nature on your desk or have a plant. It will make you less depressed or anxious.

Exercise

It does not have to be strenuous. It could be just a walk for ten minutes. This will cheer you up and get your body to release endorphins. People who exercise regularly deal better with stress effects. Any amount of workout is beneficial for your physical health as well as emotional health.

Eat Healthy Food

During down times people tend to eat less. This leads to a deficiency in energy necessary to let the body operate well. One will feel tired, irritable and easy angered. One has to make sure to get enough food and should eat the healthy foods like whole grains, veggies, fruits, and lean meats. Food is necessary to feed brain and keeps up alertness. Healthy foods can sustain energy throughout the day instead of just a short period like junk foods which can be followed by a crash.

Have Intimate Contact

This will help alleviated your low mood, boost brain and heart, and lower stress, especially if it is done with a committed partner. Oxytocin is released and it has positive effects on well-being and happiness.

Meditate

Meditation and mindfulness are very effective means of elevating mood and relieving stress. You can have a look on simple mindfulness ways through this link.
